MINUTES - D.R.Y.L. Meeting hosted by Riverside Yacht Club

OPENING:  Meeting called to order @ 8:00pm. President Paul Jusino introduced Commodore, Don Warrington, who welcomed the delegates.

GUEST SPEAKER: PA State Trooper Neely, PA Marine Operations – Tactical and Terrorist Defense, is working with local marine-related businesses, as well as boaters, to spot and deter criminal action and suspicious activity on the river

GUEST SPEAKER: US Customs and Border Protection Officer Feil is spearheading a small boat initiative and is mostly interested in vessels that are from outside US territories or have had contact with vessels from outside US territories.

GUEST SPEAKER: NJ State Police Sgt. Capiak from Burlington Station addressed where tax dollars go as far as grants to purchase boats and equipment necessary to patrol waterways.  None of this is useful without information and intelligence related to suspicious activity, and the necessity of reporting it to the authorities so they can act on it.

OFFICERS & COMMITTEE REPORTS

President:  Juice thanked everyone for coming out – cannot believe summer is almost over.  The last DRYL event, which is the Von Neida picnic, is coming up very soon.  Juice thanked Toni for another great pageant and thanked National Park and Riverwinds for great decorations at the pageant.  Juice and Bob Williams have been asked to be at PA Environmental Council Meeting.  Delaware Riverfront Corp has a new president, Thomas Corcoran.  The secretary read the letter from Juice to Mr. Corcoran.

1st Vice President: John Maloney – no report.

2nd Vice President: Butch Gricco – no report.

3rd Vice President: Steve Zielinski – no report. 

Secretary:  Rick Patton – no report.

Audit & Budget: Bill Branchide – no report.

Banquet:  Mary Jusino – no report

Cruise:  Bob Grace – Cruise from July 2009, 11 boats from 5 clubs visited spots around Chesapeake Bay.  Bob gave details of expenses ($1150).  All boats returned under their own power.  It was a good trip. 

Donations – no requests.

Fleet Surgeon: Harry Borgersen – suggested ways to reduce risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.  Eat a diet with lots of vegetables and exercise – especially walking.  Flu season is coming up.  If you have symptoms, drink lots of fluid, get plenty of rest and take Tylenol.

NJ Legislation: John Honer – NJ Legislation out for summer recess.  John spoke about moratorium on law regarding public access to marina property.  Task force needs to be formed and research collected.  Bill was signed last year, but so far, no forward motion on this.


Pageant:  Toni Nespola – introduced new DRYL Queen, Carla Cefalone.  Carla thanked everyone for their support and is looking forward to representing the DRYL in the coming year.  Toni thanked Bob and Mary Grace as well as all that donated items for the princess luncheon.  Toni reviewed the events of the day: flip flop parade, boat judging, decorated boats and the pageant itself which was held at the Seaport Museum with hosts Bob Bocock and Astra Haldeman.  Avalon String Band performed at the intermission and the girls had a chance to dance and have some fun.  The finalists: Miss Congeniality – Miss Harbor Light YC, Brigette McGinn; 2nd Runner Up – Miss Wissinoming YC, Kristina Ignasiak; 1st Runner Up – Miss Bristol YC – Sommer Hefflefinger; and the 2009 Queen of the DRYL – Miss Anchor YC, Carla Cefalone.  Back at the marina, DJ John was updating everyone on the winners along with playing all those favorite songs.  Toni announced raffle winners and thanked all that helped to make the pageant a success.  Toni will give the financial report next month.

Picnic: Marie Houseworth  – Saturday, September 12th at Pennsylvania Yacht Club from 12:30 to 6:00pm. DJ Jerry will be there from 5:30 – 11:00pm.  The princesses will run children’s games.  Club competitions will be held.  Call Marie for tickets.  Tickets are $20; children ages 11-17 are $10; children under 10 are free. Ticket sales have been extended to Wednesday, September 9th.  Buses have been made available for those who wish to utilize them.  DRYL will pay for ½ of the cost of the bus.  Clubs should contact Marie if your club wants use of the bus service.  Call Steve Zielinski at 215-284-0427 for mooring at the picnic.

Public Affairs: Bill Garwood – no report.

Regatta:  Fred Saunders – no report. 

Safe Boating: Frank Gilbert – Frank distributed flyers concerning Educating the Crew for an Emergency and Never Stay Aboard in a Hurricane.

Shoreline Planning: Joe Campbell – no report.

Webmaster:  Paul Jusino/Ben Lewitt – Website hit by virus again; problem was corrected.

Yearbook:  Denise Leo – still collecting money.  $1620 was turned in tonight; about $700 still outstanding.

Boater Voter: Joe Campbell – no report.

CBYCA:  Bob Williams – no report.

National Boating Federation (NBF): Bob Williams – no report.

Pennsylvania Boating Association - SE (PBA): Bill Garwood – Next meeting for PBA/SE is the third Wednesday in September (9/16) at Anchor YC in Bristol, PA.  Guest speaker is from Bucks County Redevelopment Authority.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

·         Check for $350 to Sea Scouts / Delaware Valley Youth Boating from Poker Run proceeds

FINANCIAL REPORTS

Corrected for August - Checkbook opening balance for August was $15,986.28.  Financial secretary reported income of $2,937.00 while Phyllis Blackeby reported disbursements of $6,656.23, resulting in a checkbook closing balance of $12,267.05.

 

Checkbook opening balance for September was $12,267.05.  Financial secretary reported income of $3,211.00 while Phyllis Blackeby reported disbursements of $2,978.58, resulting in a checkbook closing balance of $12,499.47. A motion was made, seconded and approved to pay the bills.
